Shaking off the assumptions about hard work

The larger culture has some strong opinions about hard work. It comes from a good place. People want to think that hard work comes with the same amount of reward in the end. And there's some truth to it. Hard work is usually needed to move ahead in life. It's as true for an individual as it would be for a company. However, this is also where people perhaps make some mistakes in their view of things. Hard work does get people ahead in life. But it works far better when combined with another saying. People need to work smarter, not harder.

This isn't to say that they shouldn't work hard. But that when people work smarter they're able to channel those efforts in a more productive manner. This is many evident when one looks at how automated systems impact the workforce. People often assume that computers are only really used for basic management. In a sense, they're usually implemented as little more than an advanced file cabinet.

It makes sense in a way. After all, the fact that people use the term files for the items in a computer system show how they were designed. It entered the workforce as an extension of some common ideas for theoffice. But there's been quite a few changes over the decades. And one can now use computers in a smarter way.

Understanding automation in theoffice through superior design

The best example is use of nexus software. It's a powerful set of tools which are designed around full automation. The main difference between this and older models comes through how much they do. It's designed to fully automate as much as possible. And when it can't fully automate something, it still handles the brunt of the task. This means that it's less a file system metaphor and more something that works alongside humans in an office. This makes it similar to having more people on staff. And that's how one can work smarter rather than harder.
